Quick question:

Yesterday at 9:58pm EST I got a communication from the server saying that it couldn't open sdi.

Looking at my disks I don't see a sdi, all disks are accounted for, but they are out of sequence. They go from sdh to sdj. I suppose uuid can change, but while running?

Shared folder security

@noelmm wrote:

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Rockstor having only installed it today but it appears to be quite a good option for what I need. Can i begin by saying I'm brand new to Linux and come from a Windows background so please be patient if somethings go beyond my knowledge.

I need to setup a Nas solution that is able to integrate with Active Directory so that we can backup some of our work to it and we can use our AD accounts to access the shared folder. I have been able to setup the software and enter all of the server details (I am currently testing on a virtual machine with a test domain) and create a share that is visible by browsing to the IP address from a client machine.

I have tried to setup some NTFS permissions so that only certain users can access the folder however I don't know how to do this. My first attempt told me I didn't have the permission to apply the new NTFS permission so as a workaround I added my AD username as the folder owner within the Rockstor shared folder Access Control list. Making this change allowed me to apply the NTFS permission so I added a user in and removed all permissions however the user could still access the folder and read, write and delete while inside the folder.

My questions are how would I block access to anyone except a few users that I wish to be able to have full access to the folder? Is there a way to create a group of users with Rockstor using the AD accounts and then assigning this usergroup as the owner of the shared folder?

Thanks everyone for your help and advice

Plex RockOn Installation Failing - "tag latest" unknown (3.8.15-0)

Hi,
after a reinstallation of Rockstore due to some persistent "duplicate" device paths, I am unable to install the Plex RockOn. The log seems to indicate that the "tag latest not found in repository ...".

I am running the latest version 3.8.15-0. I looked at this issue https://forum.rockstor.com/t/solved-unable-to-install-plex-rock-on/1965, but it does not seem to apply (checked the rockon_helpers.py and there it shows -d instead of daemon).

Here are the logs from today when I retried the Plex installation (I used the same setup as before, which is similar to what's documented, only thing I don't see in the input screen is a request for a transcode directory):

The first log entries were generated (I think) when I checked out the network adapter details (in case I could see an issue with some connectivity on the ethernet and docker adapter. I assume this is not the root cause, but just in case I am posting a screenshot of those here as well:

Anybody has seen this? Of course, this could just be a nooby mistake somewhere along the way.

Thanks.

This has worked before, why won't it now?

I know share sizes arent enforced, but I like to keep them at realistic levels, at least it looks better in the dashboard.

Rockstor VM doesn't boot when using OMVF (UEFI)

Hi all,

I am currently trying to deploy a Rockstor VM on my Proxmox Hypervisor. When I tried it out using the Seabios instead of OMVF UUEFI, everything went as expected, I installed the vm withour a problem and the system booted without a hitch.

For the productive system I want to switch to OMVF, as I use it for all my VMs. The installaltion worked without a problem and I restarted the VM. When it boots, I can select which Kernel I want to boot, I left in on the default one and waited for it to boot.
The problem is, it gets stuck on a black screen with a single text cursor, but it's not starting the boot procedure nor can I enter anything.
Here is a picture (even though it doesn't show much at all:

Is this a known problem or is there a workaround to get it to work?
I tried different types of disks (VirtIO, SCSI, SATA), but it doesn't change the outcome.

Kind regards,

PATCH: Fix the so-called famous RAID5/6 scrub error

Looks like Qu has submitted a patch for the RAID 5/6 scrub error bug that has given BTRFS a lot of it's more recent unreliability claims.. http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-btrfs/msg60595.html

It's great news for us and hopefully we have some confirmation on reliability improvements with RAID 5/6.. Interesting note as well, in the latest Synology DSM 6.1 BETA they highlight:

File self-healing

Btrfs file system is able to auto-detect corrupted files with mirrored metadata, and recover broken data using the supported RAID volumes, which include RAID 5, 6, 10, 1, and SHR.

I've chatted with Qu a few times about various minor bug's I've come across, he's super committed and major contributor the development of BTRFS!

Leaving rockstor

@javahaxxor wrote:

I decided to uninstall Rockstor and leave, but not without giving some feedback to the community.

My reason is simply because it's too much of a hassle. Too high disk activity for nothing, afp services stop, box needs reboot, btrfs quota issues, nfs configuration issues, nag screens, and finally it just stopped booting.

I don't know why any sane Linux power user would want to run rockstor. It took me three hours to reconfigure the whole server manually, now I mount my btrfs file system in fstab, have nfs and afp services, plex service for media, transmission server for torrents. I kept CentOS just to cut the reinstall time.

A "normal" user would want to buy a box, install rockstor from USB, have virtually everything enabled by default like apps, torrent servers, Apple services, docker apps, etc etc. And never have issues. It's a NAS for crying out loud, not a lab computer. We should be able to trust our data to it, not have issues every other week. It supposed to be forgotten in a corner.

I'm also a software developer, and I know a few things about how tempting it is to release new features. What convinced me to install Rockstor was simply the btrfs support. It was FINE, except for the disk activity issue. Then all kinds of issues started appearing.

Maybe you should follow the debian example with a stable branch, testing and unstable. People that have an actual need for stability, like me, can run that and focus on family, kids, women, and other important things.

In order to gain popularity with the masses you need to just work. Like Apple

My 50 cents. Thanks and good luck

Question about HD Standby and UUID

Hi!

In the past i´ve used OMV and as i am not lucky with setting my hdds into standby i usually solve this problem using hd-idle instead of hdparm.

So i´ve compiled hd-idle on CentOS but i still have a problem.

Usually i set the drive into standby mode by UUID but now my pool has one UUID and the single drives connected to that pool have an UUID_SUB.

So do i have to set my hdd´s now into standby by UUID_SUB?

Thx in advance!

If I log in with my admin credentials I can run an ifconfig get the IP and then connect via HTTPS.

So what did I do wrong? Or is there an issue in the latest build that prevents the IP from displaying on bootup?

I have read through the documentation and it very clearly explains how to do the replication and it also talks about recovering a share from a local snapshot, but I can not find where it explains how to recover from a snapshot created by the replication tool.

Can someone please help.

Desktop drives for NAS?

@Noggin wrote:

I picked up a pair of 6TB Toshiba X300 for $170 each. I can return them through the end of January with free shipping and no restocking fee, so long as I don't open the retail boxes. My plan was to see if a better deal came along this weekend, either cheaper desktop drives or slightly more expensive NAS drives.

My understanding is that there are two features that make a desktop drive undesirable for use in a NAS. The first is that if a bad sector is encountered, a desktop drive will spend a lot of time trying to read that sector and the RAID controller will think it failed. WD Reds have TLER which essentially disable this behavior. The second feature is relatively aggressive head parking in desktop drives. I've seen conflicting information as to whether or not this is really a bad thing. I'm inclined to believe that head parking may induce a slightly longer seek time, but otherwise is not an issue. The head moves countless times throughout its life, I can't imagine that parking it a few thousand times a year is an issue.

My system is used 90% for media storage / downloading, 5% Owncloud server for my phone's camera, and 5% "hey that's an important file I should keep." Everything except for the OS is backed up to Crashplan's servers and also encrypted and stored on ACD.

I currently have qty 6 of 2 TB drives in RAID 1. I believe I will add my new drives to the existing pool instead of making a new pool.

So here's my questions:
1. Does a lack of TLER-like behavior have a negative affect on the software raid used by Rockstor in case of a bad sector?
2. Is there any way for Rockstor / bash to enable TLER-like behavior on a Toshiba drive?
3. Am I stupid for using a couple of these drives in my system?
